Sneakers are displayed on top of a monolithic marble plinth, where the contrast in material weight and the scale of the mass amplifies the products as a spatial focal point. A glass façade that juts diagonally towards the street pulls away from the existing interior wall to form a narrow void, drawing the outside in. By letting the boundary slip and overlap, the design creates moments when inside and outside briefly swap roles.

“Old layers kept visible in Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO’s five-floor flagship renovation”
“From my ego — the urge to leave this long-standing Jingūmae building unfinished — this space began. After the concept shop ‘URA’ opened here in October 2023, ‘OMOTE’ starts now. We left the façade and shared corridors untouched, or only carved away, so the building could keep the time it carries — its ‘oldness’.” — Yasuhiro Mihara
An ageing five-storey building has been remodelled into the flagship store for Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO, using the building’s accumulated “oldness” as the starting point rather than something to be erased.
Across the five floors, new interventions are set at carefully judged distances from existing finishes, while each level takes on its own theme. Developed through long-running dialogue with designer Yasuhiro Mihara, the project treats interior work as an architectural exercise: establishing a consistent attitude that holds the whole building together.
Echoing the approach used in the same building’s street-level shop URA | URA, contrasts such as new/old, outside/inside and heavy/light are embedded as spatial devices—used to define territories and manipulate boundaries, rather than simply to create effects. Throughout, a shared set of operations—overlaying, pulling away, shifting and slicing—runs across the floors, allowing the existing structure to remain legible while new layers accumulate as a palpable thickness.
On the fifth floor, “NOSE SHOP SLOPE,” the theme is the five senses. A gently inclined floor introduces a bodily, perceptual condition, while display surfaces are kept level to stabilise perfume bottles. Instead of hiding the resulting level adjustments, the design turns them into “play,” with cut table legs and subtly lifted fixtures making the mismatch between perception and function part of the experience.
The third floor, “WALL,” is conceived to suppress any direct reading of the existing walls and original room proportions. Classical, composed fixtures line the perimeter to redraw the inner outline, but their upper edges are then violently disrupted—cut jagged and partially gouged out. Thin slices of daylight seep in through gaps against rough beams and the ceiling, and the “thickness” between old wall and new lining is registered through light and section rather than exposed surfaces.
On the second floor, “GLASS,” raw existing walls are enclosed by rigid glass, sharpening the room’s outline through a hard material contrast. Speaker units embedded in the glass vibrate the air gap between wall and screen, so products placed within the cavity become part of the acoustic environment. A glossy resin floor and knife-sharp glass edges further heighten the sense of boundary, while simultaneously spotlighting the merchandise.
Moving between floors, the spatial “rules” reset each time—linking difference to anticipation. Through vertical circulation, the building reads as a single, continuous sequence that deepens quietly as visitors climb.

At street level, “COUNTER,” sneakers sit atop a massive marble block. The weight and scale of the stone amplify the products by contrast, turning material mass into display strategy. A diagonally projecting glass façade opens a narrow void against the existing interior wall, pulling the street into the room. By letting boundaries slip and overlap, the design creates moments where inside and outside briefly exchange roles.
Moving between floors, the spatial “rules” reset each time—linking difference to anticipation. Through vertical circulation, the building reads as a single, continuous sequence that deepens quietly as visitors climb.

Order and rupture are layered at once: the tops are cut jagged, as if damaged, and gouged out to collapse the outline, allowing thin slices of daylight to seep through gaps against rough beams and the ceiling. While the wall itself is concealed, its presence is registered as a “thickness” of distance—felt through light and section—bringing old and new into focus as both image and spatial measure.

Rough existing walls are wrapped in rigid glass to sharpen the room’s outline through a stark old–new contrast. Speaker units set into the glass vibrate the air cavity behind it, with products placed in the gap becoming part of the soundscape. A glossy resin floor and knife-sharp glass edges further frame the merchandise.
MIHARA YASUHIRO
“Old layers kept visible in Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO’s five-floor flagship renovation”“From my ego — the urge to leave this long-standing Jingūmae building unfinished — this space began.

URA A small, quiet, semi-basement room in a back street in Harajuku/Jingumae Tokyo. Concept retail store for sneakers, herbal teas, perfumes and other products. A seven-metre long mirrored 'rectangle' on top of two stone blocks penetrates and protrudes from the interior to the exterior. The situation blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, extending the area from the narrow interior to the street and the surrounding residential area. Like the approach to create a garden landscape, the contrast between stillness and motion, natural and artificial objects, gives a sense of tension to the public space. The contrast between the 'surfaces and lines' as a background and the 'dots' of the products stands out.“Ura” means “backside, oposite, behind, reverse" in Japanese. Concept shop by fashion designer "Mihara Yasuhiro" dealing with products that take into account environmental and social responsibility from a multifaceted perspective, but instead of a direct gentle nature theme, they wanted a space and contrast that would make the products stand out and would betray his previous image.Due to the extremely low ceiling height and narrow interior, clients wanted the space to feel larger, so mirrored surfaces and full-length LED monitors amplify the depth and allow the space to continue outdoors. In order to provide appropriate lighting for the products in the highly reflective material and to avoid glare in the low ceiling, a light-membrane ceiling was used, with a system that also allows the colour temperature and illumination intensity to be changed. The large single panel of glass at the shop front is a detail that weakens its presence and emphasises the floating sense of a mirrored 'rectangle' that juts out from the interior. The mirrored 'rectangle' is anchored to the upper surface of the stone with anchor bolts and the cantilevered end faces are seal-glued to the glass surface. The detailing is such that it looks as if it continues inside and out, with the glass in between.Like conceptual art in a public space, the irrational volume without a specific function and unnecessary margins leave flexibility and possibilities for diversion in an experimental shop with no fixed product. Rather than the quirkiness and design of commercial interiors, the project attempts to move away from the category of interior design and think more like exterior public design. In a situation of repeated refurbishments and scrap-and-build as business conditions change, the project attempted to create a shop that would last for a long time, not with a specific purpose specification, but by leaving a margin for expansion and use outside of its intended purpose. In order to avoid the strong influence of commercial elements in a residential area, the project attempts to create small incidents that are not flashy but leave a lasting impression by contrasting material discomfort, illusion and gravity.

"Maison(MY)Labo." is a new space where the fashion brand "Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO" is experimenting. From the tiled walkway lined with zelkova trees to the brick tile floor laid continuously into the room, movable fixtures are placed as if floating in a flexible layout configuration. With little modification to the existing building frame, L-shaped partitions and fixtures are freely scattered at uneven angles to enhance the dynamic spatiality.
A compact "mobile Kiosk" is placed by the entrance, as if the outside space has entered the interior, in the style of a store you might see on the street. Visitors can enjoy shopping for sneakers and shoelaces as if they were picking up souvenirs at the counter. "The mobile KIOSK is structured by connecting wooden boxes and speakers, shifting them little by little so that there are gaps between them.
In a situation where many stores were closing due to the COVID crisis, we asked the owner of the closed store "Pass The Baton" to “pass” on some of the fixtures that were about to be thrown away, and we cut out not only the fixtures but also part of the interior of the "wall with the antique fixtures embedded in it". We reconstructed the wall by turning it over horizontally and vertically, making margins, and incorporated it into the movable partition wall with the cut surface exposed. In the gaps of the reconstructed wall, line lighting and hanger pipes are installed to enhance the new functions and forms. The gaps in the kiosk shelves are filled with quaint antique dolls, taxidermied animals, and scientific tools, and the carefully handled fixtures, products, and thoughts have taken over and found a new home.In the large, gallery-like restroom, art, antique chairs, and a kitchen sink table are installed. Aluminum sheets for heat insulation and chip cushions for the inside of the sofa are converted into wall materials for experimental use.In the movable fitting room, extra-large panels upholstered with canvas for oil painting are turned inside out and combined to form a pure white canvas inside the fitting room. With a limited budget, we are trying to divert and combine mundane materials around us, an experimental retail environment, and a layout that can be easily changed. As EC becomes more and more mainstream, experimental and unconventional creation of the store with the local community and colleagues rethinks the enjoyment and opportunity for people to go out of their way to visit the store, and even after the store is opened, it continues to transform with the involvement of various people, and the situation continues to be incomplete.

The origin of Maison MIHARA YASUHIRO, by fashion designer Mihara Yasushiro, is shoe making and one of the signature items is his unique sneakers that differ from sports brands models. A new store focusing on shoes “MY Foot Products” was opened in Harajuku, Tokyo. The store’s icon is “Kutsuhimo musubena-kun”, a mysterious character who can’t tie his own shoelace. Inside the minimalist store there is a compact and functional shoe shop that resembles a town kiosk, where you can enjoy shopping as if you were choosing a souvenir from the counter of one of the stalls you can see in stations. The main products are the sneakers with original soles, but a wide variety of goods such as shoelaces and apparel are on display too.
The interior of the shop, located on the 1st floor facing the sidewalk, has been left untouched and a movable kiosk has been installed, as like a temporary store. The kiosk is structured by connecting wooden boxes, which have been shifted little by little to create gaps between them. In these gaps shelves and speakers are embedded, and product boxes resembling food packages are randomly stacked. Ready-made hanger racks and metal fittings have been diverted, home appliances are integrated with the kiosk, all to provoke a sense of chaotic disorder. The painting done by Mihara, adds a “dummy” feeling to match the tone of the products. Using a structure of wooden boxes that can be assembled in a short time, parts and electronics that can be ordered online and ready-made products, we tried to create a low-cost store.

A project to renovate the Nihonbashi Anarchy Culture Center, a period-limited art space in a building scheduled for demolition in front of Mitsukoshi department store, Nihonbashi area, which is undergoing redevelopment. The interior, originally an antenna store for Nara Prefecture, and remaining fixtures were reused as much as possible. The walls, ceiling, and some of the fixtures were cut and destroyed to experiment in creating a new type of place. The interior, cut out like a work of art, is repainted except for the cut surfaces. Anticipating that various artworks will be replaced over the one-year period, destruction and play are repeated, leaving a blank space.

Nihombashi Anarchy Culture Center (NACC) is...The philosophy of mankind holds that play is the essence of human activity and the root from which culture emerges. And play also gives meaning to life beyond the biological activity that seeks to sustain life." In 1938, Johan Huizinga spoke of "play precedes culture" in his book Homo Ludens (The Playing Man). So-called "culture" is not a single concept, but a byproduct of various forms of "play. However, in the current era, the context of "play" has faded away, and culture has become defined as commerce. We are "preserving culture, creating culture. We do not say such snappy words as "preserve culture," "create culture," etc. We don't say such crisp words as "preserve culture," "create culture," and so on. Instead, we want to see a kind of passion and enthusiasm that is unattainable. We believe that this is what "play" is and that it is the antithesis of the current hazy modern world. For about a month and a half, Nihonbashi Anarchy Cultural Center will exhibit works by artists with different ways of expression. Art, music, architecture, film, photography, fashion, et cetera, etc., a "place" for various forms of self-expression. A showcase for artists and a "place" for cross-genre chemical reactions. Be chaotic, but never complete.
